Assignment 4-Selected Poetry

William Blake was an artist, a poet, and a visionary.
A symbol is a person, place, object, or activity that stands for something beyond itself.  A heart, for example, is a symbol for love.
Read p. 710- The Lamb and p.712- The Tyger
1.  Compare the two poems.  How are they alike?  What is the tone?  What is the imagery? What is the symbolism of each poem?  Write a paragraph comparing the two and cite lines from the poems to support your answer.

2. Compare  To an Athlete Dying Young -p. 965 to One and Twenty p. 964.  These are two separate views on youth.  What was the advice of the wise man?  What is the advice in To an Athlete Dying Young?

3.  Read Do Not Go Gently Into the Good Night -1088  What are the images of nature in this poem? What does the speaker mean by "that good night"?  What does this poem mean to you?  Write a paragraph.

4. Go to wikipedia and  read the summary of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.  After reading the summary, go to page 765 and read lines 610-617.  How do these lines represent the moral of the poem?
